Prioritizing Staff Well-Being for a Thriving Workplace

Focusing on staff well-being is essential not only for employee satisfaction and engagement but also for overall organizational success. As employee feedback increasingly reflects a demand for better workplace support, research points to the benefits of prioritizing learning and development, fostering trust, and building inclusive communities within organizations.

While much progress has been made, placing wellness at the forefront remains crucial. By addressing cross-generational needs for work-life balance and respect for expertise, organizations can cultivate a healthier workplace perspective that benefits everyone—from staff and leaders to patients and clients. Although further research is needed to fully connect well-being initiatives with organizational goals and personal fulfillment, we have a clear foundation of practices to follow.

A recent study by PwC and the University of Southern California, “A Study of the Benefits and Impact of Employee Well-Being,” highlights that prioritizing staff well-being—including leadership-driven initiatives and employee-led health practices—yields measurable positive outcomes across teams, client relationships, and the organization as a whole. This project outlines proven practices, such as empowering teams, fostering ‘citizen-led’ innovation, and equipping staff with tools for well-being. You can read about the study here.

In healthcare, the “Helping Healers Heal” program at NYC Health + Hospitals exemplifies a groundbreaking approach to wellness, addressing the needs of physicians and staff facing trauma in high-stakes environments. Recognized with awards, this program has set a new standard for workplace wellness.

From my experience with engagement/wellness initiatives, I’ve seen the importance of holistic wellness programs firsthand. At one facility, we developed a wellness program featuring massages, meditation, and Tai Chi, later expanding these offerings into a full clinic accessible to both staff and patients. Engagement surveys reflected a significant boost in satisfaction, encouraging us to focus even more on well-being initiatives.

When staff well-being is a top priority, it fosters an inclusive culture and a sense of belonging. Such initiatives, when jointly owned by staff and leaders, can lead to innovative solutions, such as digital tools for developing healthy habits.
