Why Humanities Belong in Healthcare Management

Why should we fully integrate the humanities into healthcare management? Studying literature, philosophy, history, and art expands our worldview, fostering personal growth and enhancing skills like communication and critical thinking. This enriches our understanding and empowers us to perform better in our roles. In healthcare management, this can lead to a clearer sense of purpose, increased productivity, and improved performance. The benefits are professional and personal, as it inspires and motivates us to strive for excellence in our work.

Humanities for All Healthcare Roles

The value of the humanities is recognized in clinical training. For instance, many medical programs include a medical humanities component, and nursing programs stress the importance of embracing the humanities. Both fields, and other clinical and allied professions, are acutely aware of the significance of medical ethics, for example, in providing high-quality, safe, compassionate care. Applying the practice of the humanities in areas like ethics cultivates a culture of introspection and fosters a sense of community.

And so, it is equally important for non-clinical staff to study the humanities — as they play crucial roles in supporting patient care and delivering service—they can benefit from the insights offered through the humanities. They are registration and security staff and hospital managers who ensure operations run smoothly and safely, often under stressful conditions. Integrating the study of the humanities into each component of healthcare training, development, and practice, in addition to the existing and requisite stand-alone courses, offers the promise of broadening the platform for improving the human experience.

Building Strength for the Future

By building a robust humanities-based education for non-clinical healthcare professionals, we can empower them to share their unique perspectives and challenges, enhancing understanding and empathy across all levels of healthcare. When we develop compassionate leaders armed with technological strengths and a foundation in the humanities, they can contribute to healthcare and beyond. This approach enriches their professional lives and integrates their experiences into the broader healthcare narrative, promoting a more inclusive atmosphere. We want to hear their stories and learn from their experiences.
